Every two or three years the DCLG produces household projections for future years. ONS's population projections are split by marital status using the marital status projections, and an estimate of the institutional population subtracted to give the private household population.
These population figures split by age, sex and marital status, are mutiplied by projected 'household representative rates' (which represent the projected portion of the population in that category who are household representatives) to give the numbers of households. The household representative rates are based on the 1971, 1981, 1991 Censuses and 1992 Labour Force Survey data.
