The New Economy and the role played by the ICT producing sectors: Recent trends and comparisons across OECD countries |
| Abstract |
There is no immediate reason why a country with a small or without any information and communication technology (ICT) producing industry should not benefit from the positive effects of new information technologies on growth. Yet, the question of the role of the ICT producing sector has been debated, in particular from a perspective of comparing European economies with the United States. What is the ICT sector? What is its size, how fast it is growing, what is its contribution to economic activity? How do OECD countries compare in terms of specialisation of ICT production? The paper relies on newly compiled official statistics to give an overview of the ICT sector in international comparisons. It then discusses how important is to have a relatively large ICT supply sector to be able to seize the benefits of new information technologies. |
