Title of paper Experiments on Cultivators' Fields in India - A Review
Abstract The agricultural productivity is influenced by several factors such as climate, soil, crop, the kind and level of inputs used as fertilizers applied, seed varieties, irrigation and management practices followed. Higher productivity by judicious use of inputs and improved management practices can be achieved by conducting experiments on agricultural research stations and also on cultivators' fields and then comparing their findings for appropriate recommendations to the cultivators. The method for laying down the experiments on cultivators' fields for testing research findings, pertaining to fertilizers application under actual farming conditions was first given by Panse & Sukhatme (1953). The experiments on cultivators' fields in India are now conducted as part of All India Coordinated Agronomic Research Project, a project in existence since 1956-57. The technical program, since then, has been revised and enlarged from time to time in the light of the experience gained in previous years and also in view of changing agricultural needs. The paper first presents a comprehensive review of the methodology and analysis of these experiments and then suggests improvement in the Sampling Design and ANOVA model currently in use, through introducing varying probability sampling design and mixed effect model. The paper also examines the design-effect of new sampling design on the use of ANOVA model.
