Statistics based on data from Internet Service Providers |
| Abstract |
There is a growing demand for statistics about access and use of the Internet. In particular, there is a strong need for information about broadband access. Such statistics can be based on information from the users, but Internet Service Providers (ISPs) is another source that can provide information about Internet infrastructure, subscribers, services and usage. The paper describes a new Norwegian survey based on data collection from ISPs and some methodological challenges linked to this. Statistics Norway started data collection in the beginning of April 2002 and plans to publish the first results by the end of June. One important aim of the new survey is to present detailed geographical information about the distribution of the Internet infrastructure (including the population's broadband access). Surveys of ISPs face several methodological problems: Delimitation of the population, choice of relevant perspectives, interpretation of technical complexities and appropriate definitions of variables. Other important issues that will be discussed in the paper are data quality issues and the electronic collection of data. |
