Industrial Productivity in Brazil in the Nineties |
| Abstract |
The Brazilian economy, as many other emerging economies, faced a deep process of openness in the nineties. During this period, official industrial statistics went a great revision, and so the evaluation of the impact of openness over industrial structure was under dispute among specialists. Two positions emerged in the debate: on one hand, it was understood that productivity growth was spurious. On the other hand specialists accepted that productivity growth was real, but there was no consensus about the figures of growth. In this paper our aim is to briefly describe the sources of official statistical information available until now, and to drop some conclusions about the bias of the different sources of measurements of industrial productivity. As a conclusion we will show that Brazilian industrial productivity has increased in all sectors, but with no convergence trend. |
