Behind the Conference

The International Statistical Institute (ISI) was established in 1885 and is one of the oldest international scientific associations functioning in the modern world. The institute is an autonomous society that seeks to develop and improve statistical methods and their application through the promotion of international activity and co-operation. Linked to the ISI is the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS). The IAOS is an international organisation that brings together producers and users of official statistics. Its objectives are to promote the understanding and advancement of official statistics and to foster the development of effective and efficient official statistical services on a global basis.

Every two years the IAOS hold a conference to complement the annual ISI Conference. Country members take turns to host this event. In 2002 the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) has the pleasure of hosting this major international statistical conference between 27-29 August. The conference will be organised in collaboration with the Royal Statistical Society (RSS). The conference will be held in the centre of London, at Church House, located close to the Office for National Statistics. A conference reception and dinner will be open to all those participating in the conference as well as any accompanying partners.
