What does this guide contain?
Methodological information and links to all Consumer Price Indices (CPI) and Retail Prices Index (RPI) articles published since 1998. Note that in articles and documents before December 2003, the CPI is called the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP). Despite the name change, the CPI and HICP remain the same index.

'The New Inflation Target: the Statistical Perspective' sets out the statistical background to the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Pre-Budget Report announcement in November 2003 that the UK inflation target would be changed from one based on the Retail Prices Index excluding mortgage interest payments (PRIX) to one based on the HICP, which was renamed the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) for domestic purposes.
