In 2000, for the second year running, the number of jobs in the public sector showed a year on year increase driven by rises in Education and NHS Trusts. Private sector jobs have also increased. Between 1999 and 2000 the total workforce jobs increased by 164,000. In 2000 82 per cent (23.9 million) of all workforce jobs were in the private sector compared with just over 5 million jobs in the public sector, which increased by 93,000 jobs over the year.
