In 1999 the number of jobs in the public sector increased for the first time since 1979. Private sector jobs also increased by a more substantial margin. The article shows that between 1998 and 1999 the total workforce jobs increased by 287,000. In 1999 82 per cent (22.9 million) of all workforce jobs were in the private sector compared with just under 5 million jobs in the public sector, which increased by 44,000 jobs over the year.
