United Kingdom regional trade in goods statistics
HM Customs and Excise data on imports and exports for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the nine English Government Office regions.
This new data series was launched by HM Customs and Excise on 27 January 2000. It publishes data on imports and exports for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the nine English Government Office regions. Intended primarily for statisticians in the newly devolved administrations, the data is also of interest to analysts taking a strategic overview of the UK's regional economies.
The data is compiled from existing declarations submitted to Customs and Excise, thereby minimising the impact on the data providers. For trade with the European Union the data is taken from responses under the 'Intrastat' survey. For trade with countries outside the EU the standard Customs declarations are used. Manufacturing and processing facilities are allocated to a region through their postcode, linked to their VAT registration. The article explains the methodology in detail.
The value of each region's import and export trade, together with the number of companies engaged in that trade, is provided in quarterly Customs and Excise statistical press releases. More detailed data, providing further analysis for each region by industry sector and key markets, is available for purchase.
