Economic statistics and the Standard Industrial Classification 2003
The article describes the new SIC (2003) and ONS' arrangements for transition from SIC (92) to SIC (2003).
The article sets out the reasons for the 2003 revision of the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) and the processes involved both nationally and within the EU for defining the new version of the SIC. The main changes from the current SIC (92) are described and the effects of the changes quantified. It also describes the way in which ONS is phasing in SIC (2003) for its economic statistics, starting with the changes already made to the business register. The arrangements for moving business inquiries and national accounts on to a SIC (2003) basis are set out as are the plans for parallel running of the Annual Business Inquiry results under both versions of the SIC.
