An improved House Price Index- update on developments
Summary of early findings of a feasibility study for the development of a better official house price index.
This article summarises the emerging findings of a feasibility study into the development of a better official house price index. The study was initiated and led by the Office for National Statistics in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, HM Treasury, Bank of England and HM Land Registry.
It builds upon earlier collaborative work as reported in the December 1998 edition of Economic Trends and has benefited from valuable inputs from a number of major users and experts in the field as well as technical expertise drawn from within the ONS and ODPM. Some of the recommendations of the study are conditional on the results of further exploratory work and some may also need to be reviewed in the longer term in the event of possible external developments such as the introduction of a “sellers” pack or electronic conveyancing.
