This article describes the changes being made to the Index of Production (IoP) computer system, and the methodological improvements which are being incorporated as part of the project. The main reason for the changes is to update the computer system from a spreadsheet based system to move to the standard ONS national accounts software. The main methodological enhancements are focused around the method for adjusting for monthly change in inventories and seasonal adjustment which, when implemented, will improve the overall quality of the outputs. These changes will affect data back to 1994.
The project is progressing to timetable, prototype systems have been signed off by the users and work is underway to produce a final system, but due to the early stage of this work it is not possible to discuss the emerging results. Quality assurance of the final system will be completed in Spring 2003, after which a further article will be produced. The results from the new system will be published after the paper publication of the September 2003 Blue Book.
