Research and Experimental Development (R&D) Statistics 2000
Expenditure and Employment data on Research and Development activity, in particular in the Business Enterprise and Government sectors.
This article is the latest in an annual series published in the August editions of Economic Trends. The purpose of the report is to bring together a range of data produced and published by National Statistics in order to inform and stimulate debate within the R&D community.
The statistics contained in the article are consistent with OECD's Frascati Manual which defines Research and Experimental Development (R&D) as; "Creative work undertaken systematically to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture and society, and the use of this knowledge to devise new applications".
As well as making international comparisons of expenditure on R&D, the article also looks at the regional breakdown of R&D expenditure and the number of people employed in R&D. The tables provide data from performers and funders of R&D divided into four economic sectors: Government, Business, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), and the Private Non-Profit (PNP) sector.
