This article summarises work carried out by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) during 2005 to improve estimates of software investment, which makes up an increasing proportion of capital formation in National Accounts.
The study has provided new estimates of own-account software investment; proposes an integrated approach to using surveys on software purchased by firms, and identifies areas in financial services and government where better data are required.
