Jobs in the Public and Private Sectors
This is the latest in a series of annual articles presenting movements in the number of jobs in the public and private sectors over recent years.
This article presents data updated to June 2001 on jobs in the public and private sectors. It shows the relative overall size of the two sectors (Table A) and gives a more detailed analysis of jobs in the public sector.
There were 9.4 million jobs in the UK in 2001, 82.5 per cent were in the private sector, with 5.2 million in the public sector. Jobs in the public sector increased by 91,000 between 2000 and 2001 whilst private sector jobs rose by 115,00 over the same period, The increase in public sector jobs, the third annual rise, was mainly due to education and the National Health Service.
The article looks in detail at the distribution of public sector employee jobs by industry sector in Table D (e.g. education and health) on a full-time equivalent basis as well as headcount. It also gives details of major sector changes from 1998 to 2001.
