This article looks at trends in inflation since 1947 as measured by the RPI. Much of the data that underpins this analysis has previously been published but it has not, until now, been available electronically.
The article starts by considering trends in the composition of households’ expenditure, as shown by the weights used to construct the RPI, and examines how this is reflected in the range of representative items used to construct the RPI. It then looks at trends in inflation, and finishes with a comparison of how average prices of selected products have changed over the years.
