UK atmospheric emissions and energy use accounts, 1990 - 1999
Information about the emissions of atmospheric pollutants and the use of energy by UK businesses and households for 1990 to 1999.
This article presents information about the emissions of atmospheric pollutants and the use of energy by United Kingdom businesses and households for 1990 to 1999, first published in an Office for National Statistics (ONS) News Release on 28 June 2001. The information forms part of the environmental accounts, which are satellite accounts to the main National Accounts.
In the article the main results are discussed, together with tables and charts showing the estimated changes in emissions and energy use for the 12 main industrial sectors of the economy. More detailed results for 91 industrial sectors can be obtained from the environmental accounts pages of the Natural and Built Environment theme.
In summary, the results show that emissions of greenhouse gases by the non-domestic sector of the UK economy, weighted by global warming potential, fell by 16½ per cent between 1990 and 1999, while emissions from household consumption increased by 6½ per cent over the same period, mainly as a result of increased energy use in the home.
