Recent developments in the measurement of general government output
Recent output developments in three new areas; the fire service, local authority personal social services and probation service; and the list of activities and volume measures.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is currently undergoing a programme to increase the coverage of government non-market output that will be measured using directly observed outputs rather than the inputs required to provide the services.
This article looks at recent output developments made by ONS in three new areas; the fire service, local authority personal social services and probation service. The list of activities and volume measures that cover all or most of the work in each of the three areas are also included in the article.
The article compares the effect, in each new area, of using the new output measures against the use of the old input methodology. The impacts of implementing these measures on the growth of constant price General Government Final Expenditure and Gross Domestic Product are also explored. The effect on the short-term movement of the General Government deflator is also discussed.
